Protecting your skin in NZ
New Zealand is known for its stunning natural beauty and outdoor activities, but it also has some of the strongest levels of UV radiation in the world.
That's why it's essential to make the right sun care choices and protect your skin from damage. Your Unichem Pharmacist can provide you with the right care, advice, and products to help you be sun smart.
The Importance of Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
One of the most critical steps you can take is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields against both UVA rays, which cause wrinkles and premature ageing, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn. When selecting a sunscreen, choose one with a high SPF value, such as SPF 50+, which indicates how much protection the sunscreen has against the burning rays of the sun.
Getting the Most out of Your Sunscreen
To get the most out of your sunscreen, you need to apply it correctly. Most people don't apply enough or reapply often enough, leaving them vulnerable to skin damage. The teaspoon rule recommends using a teaspoon of sunscreen for each arm and face and two teaspoons for each leg. On an average adult body, that's at least seven teaspoons. Apply the sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going into the sun and reapply every two hours, even if the sunscreen is water-resistant.
Additional Sun Protection Measures
It's also essential to seek shade, especially between 10 am and 4 pm, and to cover up with hats, shirts, and sunglasses. Remember that car windows do not block UVB rays, so apply sunscreen when driving.
Treating Sunburn and Seeking Expert Advice
If you get sunburnt, act quickly and treat the area with a cold compress or cool water, moisturise the skin, drink fluids to stay hydrated, and seek expert advice from your Unichem Pharmacist if necessary. They can provide guidance if you experience blisters, severe pain or discomfort, or if the sunburn is accompanied by chills, fever, nausea or vomiting.
